Find out which division will have the MOST defensive talent in the NFL during the 2021
The stats on this one are hard to believe
NFL fans,
Currently NFL.com has an awesome series of articles that they have been running this offseason called “Next Gen Stats.” The articles focus on a series of analytical categories and the top players in each of them. I would highly encourage anyone reading this to go check it out.
It was actually a few of these articles that sparked the idea for today’s newsletter. When I dove into some of these articles from the defensive side of the ball I started to notice a trend. The defenses in the AFC North are absolutely FULL of high level talent.
Now while I don’t mean any disrespect to the rest of the NFL, I do want to make it clear that the AFC North is considerably more star studded on the defensive side of the ball than the rest of the league. If you don’t like that cold, hard reality as fan then I suggest you start tweeting at your favorite team now and tell them to get active in free agency next season because the gap is pretty sizable.
So on that note, let’s get into the numbers.
5 of the top 20 “coverage players” (secondary and linebackers) in the NFL reside in the AFC North. Also, 3 of the top 4 “disruptors” (pass rushers) in the NFL all play in the division as well. You could genuinely make an argument that 33% of the top 24 defensive players in the NFL come from one singular division. This is nearly triple what you would expect to see if the NFL had a proportionate balance when it comes to defensive talent across the league’s eight divisions.
There are a lot of conclusions to be drawn from this data but I would like to stick to one today. Let’s call it my [insert food brand name here if anyone in their marketing department is reading this] scalding hot, extra spicy take of the day (seriously…your brand will never get me cheaper than you can right now). My prediction is that this defensive dominance will lead to three AFC North playoff teams for the second consecutive year.
Things may change and if they do I will adapt my viewpoint, but as of right now the AFC North stands to be the premier defensive division in the NFL this year and I personally cannot wait to watch it play out.
